Biosciences (Undergraduate)

Message to new students

In offering you a place, we believe you are all exceptional students. This is your chance to realise your potential and ensure your CV will stand out from the crowd by graduation.

At the School of Biological Sciences (SBS), you will learn much about your chosen field from staff who contribute to the world-class research Manchester is so well known for.

Starting university can be both daunting and exciting. Our teaching and expectations of you may be very different from what you are used to. The number of students taking the same lectures as you may also seem enormous at first.

Rest assured that this will all become entirely normal very quickly, and you will soon get to know people who have the same lectures, practicals and tutorials in common with you.

Don't forget that there is plenty of support available if you are unsure of anything at all, and no question is too small to ask. You will each have a academic advisor to speak to or email. There are also other teaching staff, postgraduate demonstrators and PASS leaders who are happy to help, along with a dedicated team in the SBS student support office who you can email or visit.

Make the most of the opportunities offered at Manchester while you study. Try something new, whether it's joining a society or playing sport, but, above all, enjoy student life.

Wishing you all success and happiness in the coming year.

Dr Nicky High
