How your course will be delivered

We understand that you may have questions about how your course will be delivered. We've summarised the main points below.

Key points

Induction

There will be a two-week induction period starting with the central university induction in the week commencing 9 September. Activities will be provided online, so it is not necessary to be in Manchester during this week.

The Midwifery programme induction will start from the week commencing 16 September, and will incorporate a range of on-campus and online activities where students will be introduced to all elements of the programme and will have the opportunity to meet fellow students and teaching staff.

For this professional programme, all students are required on campus from 16 September.

During this week, you will also be introduced to some key information to help you prepare for both academic study and learning in practice.

Teaching and learning

Semester 1 teaching will start in the week commencing 23 September 2024. We will deliver the programme using a blend of high quality online and face-to-face sessions, designed to make your learning enjoyable, challenging and effective.

There will be frequent on-campus learning activities, including large group lectures and small group sessions. These will include a number of clinical skills sessions to help you prepare for learning and working safely in practice. In addition, you will engage in online activities including directed reading, online case studies, video lectures, online quizzes and more.

Placement learning environments

Following an initial period of 8 weeks academic learning, you will commence placements in the clinical learning environment. It is our top priority to keep you and those you care for in the clinical learning environment safe, so we will undertake a risk assessment of all students accessing these areas, before you commence placement.

Academic advisors

You will be allocated to an Academic Advisor who has a professional qualification as a midwife. In Year 1, this person will also be your Academic Assessor. You will meet with them regularly throughout Semester 1 and beyond, to help you review your progress through the programme and also provide an invaluable pastoral support opportunity.
