Welcome to Electrical, Electronic and Mechatronic Engineering
We are looking forward to welcoming you to the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and are committed to providing the best student experience possible while also recognising that things aren’t still fully back to normal. We’re following government advice and if there are any changes in the coming weeks then we’ll be in touch to give you the most up-to-date information.
How we’ll support you
Meet Sam Ward, our Student Welfare Officer.
From Monday, 20 September, specific Welcome and Induction starts for your area of study. There will be a range of online and in-person Department activities for you to make friends, meet your lecturers and settle into University life. It is important you make arrangements to attend all these sessions and they will automatically appear on your timetable.
You will also be able to access a digital platform which connects you to all the tools you need for your studies and essential resources such as your timetable, Blackboard including your community space, library and the student system, all via ‘My Manchester’ student portal.
Please ensure you have activated your IT account to enable you to access this information via the student portal ‘My Manchester’. You will then need to register as a student. We suggest you do this before arriving in Manchester. You can start to register online from 1st September – 30th September, failing to register during this time will incur a late registration charge of £200.
Blackboard community space
Once you have access to the Blackboard community space for your studies you will find an extensive list of useful information and resources including a copy of the welcome programme for 2021 including videos and presentations. You will need to log in with your new username and password.
There is also an online Health and Safety information module for you to complete along with useful links to library resources and student support and welfare guidance.
The welcome timetables are currently being finalised and so to make sure you receive all the vital information you will receive an email from your department week commencing 6th September which will also include a documented version of the welcome activities that you must attend.
The Department will be using a new system to record and monitor student engagement at timetabled teaching activities. Recording attendance helps us see where you might be struggling and offer support. It will also help us make sure everyone is meeting their attendance requirements - for example if your attendance is required for a professional accreditation or your student visa.
Using My Attendance, is quick and easy, you 'check in' to register your own attendance at timetabled activities and you can view your attendance record history. Relevant staff can also see and edit your attendance record if required.
We are currently working on plans to trial the system during welcome activities, so please familiarise yourself with the information on when and how to access the system from the welcome website – my attendance.
By the time you have received this email, most of you will have arranged your university accommodation. If this isn’t the case, or if you need any help or advice, you should contact the University Accommodation Office by email email@example.com.
Student Support in the Faculty of Science and Engineering
Students can access support from the ground floor in MECD (Manchester Engineering Campus next to James Chadwick Building map ref: 89 – interactive map ref: 24) or from the Barnes Wallis hub (map. ref: 9) on the campus map. Opening hours are Mon – Fri 9am – 5pm.
The MECD hub is based on the ground floor. As you enter the building you will find our support area beside the main stairwell. The Barnes Wallis hub is also on the ground floor near the entrance in the Barnes Wallis Building.
Our helpful and friendly student service team aim to resolve your query or refer and signpost appropriately. If we can’t answer your question we will find out who can!
- General student life enquiries, help with registration and start of year questions
- Advice and referrals specific to your subject area.
- Welfare, student support and student service guidance and private space.
In the first instance, you must still make queries directly to your department via email: firstname.lastname@example.org
North campus information
In addition to the student hub services, students can also use adjoining facilities including the faculty managed computer cluster and Café North.
All first year students will be able to collect their student cards from the marquee area and inside the Barnes Wallis hub space from 9am – 4pm.
Monday 20th September – MACE 1st year students
To aid the prompt production of your student card please ensure that you have uploaded a passport style head and shoulders photograph via https://my.manchester.ac.uk/portlet/my-photo. This can be completed from 1st – 10th September.
Welcome Week can be a challenging and exhilarating time, where you will be meeting both academic and support staff and will enjoy a range of social events.
You’ll need to absorb and process a great deal of information in a relatively short period of time – so try to be as prepared as possible before you arrive.
