From Tuesday 20 September, your Departmental Welcome, Induction and Transition programme will begin for your area of study. There will be a range of blended activities to help you make friends, meet your lecturers and settle into University life. It is important that you make arrangements to attend all of these sessions. They should automatically appear on your personal timetable which can be accessed once you complete registration. Additionally, the School will communicate the timetable via email nearer the time.

You will also be able to access a digital platform, 'My Manchester' student portal, which connects you to all the tools you need for your studies and essential resources such as your timetable, Blackboard (including your community space), the library and the student system.

Please ensure you have activated your IT account to enable you to access this information via My Manchester. You will then need to register as a student . We suggest you do this before arriving in Manchester. You can start to register online from 1 September – 30 September; failing to register during this time will incur a late registration charge of £200.

Blackboard community space

Once you have access to the Blackboard community space for your studies you will find an extensive list of useful information and resources including a copy of the Welcome, Induction and Transition programme for 2022 which will include videos and/or presentations. You will need to log in with your new username and password.

Undergraduate

Postgraduate

There is also an online Health and Safety information module for you to complete along with useful links to library resources and student support and wellbeing guidance.

Timetables

The Welcome, Induction and Transition programme timetables are currently being finalised and so to make sure you receive all vital information, you will receive an email from your Department in the week commencing 5 September, which will also include a documented version of the activities that you must attend.

My Attendance

The Department will be using a system called My Attendance to record and monitor student engagement at timetabled teaching activities. Recording attendance helps us see where you might be struggling and offer support. It will also help us make sure everyone is meeting their attendance requirements, for example if your attendance is required for a professional accreditation or your student visa.

Using My Attendance is quick and easy; you 'check in' to register your own attendance at timetabled activities and you can view your own attendance record history. Relevant staff can also see and edit your attendance record if required.

Please familiarise yourself with the information on when and how to access the system from My Manchester – My Attendance.

University accommodation

By the time you have received this email, most of you will have arranged your university accommodation. If this isn’t the case, or if you need any help or advice, you should contact the University Accommodation Office by email at accommodation@manchester.ac.uk

Student Support in the Faculty of Science and Engineering

Students can access support from the first floor in Engineering Building A, just type 1A.043 into the interactive map, or the ground floor of the Alan Turing Building (map ref: 46), depending on the nearest location to you at the time.

Our helpful and friendly teams will aim to resolve your query or refer and signpost appropriately. If we can’t answer your question we will find out who can!

Services available:

  • General student life enquiries – including help with registration, start of year questions, tuition fees, bank letters and non-specialist visa advice.
  • Advice and referrals - specific to your subject area.
  • Wellbeing support - including private space to discuss confidential queries with our team.

In the first instance, you must still make queries directly to your Department via email: materials@manchester.ac.uk

The Welcome, Induction and Transition period can be a challenging and exhilarating time, where you will be meeting both academic and support staff and will enjoy a range of social events.

You’ll need to absorb and process a great deal of information in a relatively short period of time, so try to be as prepared as possible before you arrive.

We look forward to meeting you soon!
