Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks

You will need to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) enhanced criminal record check in the first few weeks of semester one. Staff in the Division will assist you in the completion of this check.

A condition of your entry (and continuation) onto programme is for an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check to take place and the disclosure be deemed satisfactory.

You will be given instructions on completing your DBS check prior to your arrival at University (via the Post Office route) in your Welcome letter.

It is extremely important that you read the guidance and understand what documents the applicant must provide (PDF) you can use for validation.

If you are unsure about the documentation you must provide or you have any questions please contact the SHS Student Support and Wellbeing Team located in the SHS Student Hub (Ground Floor Atrium, Jean McFarlane Building).

What if my DBS enhanced disclosure shows that I have a criminal record?

We consider each student on a case-by-case basis, and have our own procedures in place to deal with students who have previous convictions, cautions or reprimands. Please contact your programme director or the Student Support and Wellbeing team in the first instance.
